In this tutorial, we first described a mathematical model of a society in which agents can connect to each other and share information. We then examined the society while varying the parameter of access. Increasing access is akin to the effects of modern information technology in the real world. New technologies allow easy connection between agents irregarless of their physical location.
We found that a high level of access leads to a more stratified society, in which networks form among the information elite to the exclusion of less-knowledgable agents. The gaps that separate such networks tend to increase with time. This model supports the notion that connections with knowledgable groups of people are a valuable asset.
Throughout this paper, we have modeled the effects of information technologies as an increase in the parameter of access, while holding other parameters constant. One might suppose that information technology could have other effects as well. Perhaps new technologies could affect how many people one can communicate with at the same time, effectively increasing an agent's channel count. Under such different conditions, we would arrive at different results.
Because of this, we encourage you to undertake your own investigation of this society model. The parameters we discussed in this tutorial can all be manipulated directly using our main simulator. It is questioning the basic assumptions and their implications which can help improve understanding, achieve different outcomes, and assist policy. We also encourage you to read the paper to understand more formally the details of how the model works.
