The Society Model: Dynamic Properties

We now move on to considering the question of how such a society changes through time. Agent knowledge changes as a function of three processes.

1. Agents learn knowledge in every time period. The amount of knowledge learned is a simple function of how much knowledge the agent has to begin with. As we will see later, the precise form of the learning function is generally not important, so long as it is increasing in the amount of knowledge. We will usually employ a linear function here for simplicity.

2. Agents gain knowledge through sharing. The amount of knowledge shared is given as a fraction of the knowledge held. The sharing algorithm used here is the Info Subsets Model (1). This model keeps track of what information is shared by what sets of agents, and shared knowledge does not get reshared.

3. Finally, knowledge will depreciate at a certain rate, or become outdated and useless.

In the coming slides, we will examine what happens to the knowledge endowments of agents as a function of time.
